Heart Granny Square

Heart Granny Square

PREMISE

I wanted to create something for Valentine’s that was little bit different from all I see online and especially with no sewing involved, so I went for a Heart Granny Square!

I started with the Heart Applique and then I joined other yarn to create the Granny Square, here below the pattern step by step.

At this link, you can find the free pattern for the Heart Applique.

This pattern is totally free, but it’s intellectual property of Elendipity.
You can use it and, of course, you can sell the final products you create, but you cannot sell the pattern or any alteration of the pattern.

You can share the pattern for free, but remember that you should also always credit Elendipity (as pattern creator) whenever you create and/or sell it and/or share it.

Feel free to tag me on my Instagram if you create it, I would love to see your works!!

HOW TO

To create the Heart Granny Square you will have to first crochet the Heart (Heart Applique at this link) and then you can move on with this pattern to create the Granny Square.

MATERIAL

I used:

  • 3mm crochet hook
  • Rainbow Cotton 8/6 – less than 5gr for the Granny Square part (less than 3gr for the Heart) – You can use the yarn you want, I’m just indicating the yarn I used for this specific project
  • stitch marker
  • darning needle

I bought the yarn at Hobbii.

TERMS

Here below the list of the stitches (US terminology) that you are going to use for this project.

  • CH = Chain
  • SS = Slip Stitch
  • SC = Single Crochet (only for the heart)
  • HDC = Half Double Crochet (only for the heart)
  • DC = Double Crochet
  • TC = Treble Crochet (only for the heart)
  • st = stitches
  • Instruction between * … * means you have to repeat what is between the asterisks by the times indicated after the second asterisk.
  • Instruction between ( … ) means you have to do all the stitches in the brackets in the same stitch.
  • You will always find the acronym of the stitch and a number close to it; if the number is before the name of the stitch, it means that you will have to repeat those stitches in the same space.

For example:

5 SC = 5 Single Crochet in the same stitch/space

SC 5 = 5 Single Crochet in the next 5 stitches

Ready to start?

Let’s go!!

HEART GRANNY SQUARE

START

Take the Heart, turn it on the wrong side (back) and join the yarn on  the top right behind the last TC before 3ch.

The needle indicates where to insert the crochet hook.

Heart Granny Square 1
  • R1

Now do CH 2 (it will count as DC).

Heart Granny Square 2
  • Continuing R1

2 DC, CH 1.

The needle indicates where to go next, which is the back of the first TC after the 3 CH on the other top side of the heart.

Heart Granny Square 3
  • Continuing R1

You do 3 DC, CH 2 and you will now do other 3 DC (these last 3 DC will be worked on the back of the second TC after the 3 CH), CH 1.

The needle indicates where to go next, which is the third loop of the HDC.

  • Continuing R1

In the third loop of the HDC you will work:

(3 DC + CH 2 + 3 DC), CH 1.

The needle indicates where to go next, which is the third loop of the HDC on the other side of the heart.

  • Continuing R1

In the third loop of the HDC you will work:

(3 DC + CH 2 + 3 DC), CH 1.

The needle indicates where to go next, which is the back of the second TC before the CH 3, counting from the top.

Now you will do:

(3 DC + CH 2).

Then SS 1 to join to the top of the initial CH 2.

Heart Granny Square 6
  • R2

You will start R2 with CH 2 * and turn.

You are now working on the right side (front).

* The CH 2 will count as DC.

Heart Granny Square 7
  • Continuing R2

Now you are creating the corner, so in the 2-CH space of the previous round, you will do (2 DC, CH 2, 3 DC).

Heart Granny Square 8
  • Continuing R2

CH 1, 3 DC in the next 1-CH space of the previous round, CH 1, (corner: 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC) in the next 2-CH space of the previous round, CH 1.

Heart Granny Square 9
  • Continuing R2

3 DC in the previous 1-CH space, CH 1, (corner: 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC) in the previous 2-CH space, CH 1, 3 DC in the previous 1-CH space, CH 1, (corner: 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC) in the previous 2-CH space, CH 1, 3 DC in the previous 1-CH space, CH 1 and now join with SS 1 on top of the initial CH 2 (where indicated by the needle).

  • Finishing

After you’ve done the last st (SS), you will cut a little bit of a tail to weave in.

Take the darning needle and weave all the ends (this one and the initial one, when you joined the new colour) and your HEART GRANNY SQUARE is done! 💖

  • Blocking

Now, if you prefer, you could block the Heart Granny Square to give it a better shape.

Now that you have mastered the pattern you can create as many Heart Granny Square as you want.

You can use different yarn and you can join them together to create various projects: pillow covers, bags, etc.

You could also joined them together with my Cat Granny Square, free pattern at this link or my Spider Granny Square, at this link.
