I wanted to create something for Halloween that was little bit different from all I see online and especially with no sewing involved, so I went for a Spider Granny Square!
I started with the Spider Applique and then I joined other yarn to create the Granny Square, here below the pattern step by step.
At this link, you can find the free pattern for the Spider Applique.
This pattern is totally free, but it’s intellectual property of Elendipity. You can use it and, of course, you can sell the final products you create, but you cannot sell the pattern or any alteration of the pattern.
If you can share the pattern for free, but remember that you should also always credit Elendipity (as pattern creator) whenever you create and/or sell it and/or share it.
Feel free to tag me on my Instagram if you create it, I would love to see your works!!
HOW TO
To create the Spider Granny Square you will have to first crochet the Spider (Spider Applique at this link) and then you can move on with this pattern to create the Granny Square.
MATERIAL
I used:
3mm crochet hook
Rainbow Cotton 8/6 – less than 5gr for the Granny Square part (less than 3gr for the Spider) – You can use the yarn you want, I’m just indicating the yarn I used for this specific project
Here below the list of the stitches (US terminology) that you are going to use for this project.
CH = Chain
SS = Slip Stitch
SC = Single Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
TC = Treble Crochet (only for the spider)
DTC = Double Treble Crochet (only for the spider)
BLO = Back Loop Only
st = stitches
What you find in brackets “(…)” is all in one stitch/chain space.
Ready to start?
Let’s go!!
SPIDER GRANNY SQUARE
* * * No Spiders were harmed in the making of these Granny Squares! * * *
START
Take the Spider and join the yarn 2 st before where you had the stitch marker (basically in the second last SS of the second round of the spider applique), then do 1 CH.
R1
Now do SC 3 (the first one will be in the same SS where you just joined the yarn, the other 2 in the next two st).
CH 8, now in BLO, SC 1 in correspondence of the DTC).
Continuing R1
CH 3.
Continuing R1
Now you will crochet in the back of the spider (between two legs), so turn the spider and insert the crochet where indicated by the needle, do DC 1 and CH 8.
Continuing R1
Now again you’ll work on the back of the spider (between the fangs) as indicated by the needle, do DC 1 and then CH 8.
Continuing R1
Once again you’ll crochet in the back (between the legs), as indicated by the needle, do DC 1 and CH 3.
Now, working in the front of spider, in BLO, SC 1 in correspondence of the DTC on the other side.
CH 8 and then do a SS in the first SC of this round.
R2
CH 2, turn.
The first 2 CH won’t count as DC.
If you prefer to count the 2 CH as stitch, then in the next step you will do the corner with 2 initial DC instead of 3 DC.
Continuing R2
Now you are creating the corner, so in the 8CH space of the previous round, you will do (DC 3, CH 2, DC 3).
Then CH 1, (3 DC) in the 3CH space of the previous round.
Continuing R2
CH 1, (DC 3, CH 2, DC 3) in the next 8CH space of the previous round.
Now you will do (3 DC) where indicated by the needle.
Three pictures to show you all the three places where to insert the crochet for each DC.
In the second step (second picture) you can do either a front post or simply insert the crochet in the middle of the DC of the previous round.
Continuing R2
CH 1, (DC 3, CH 2, DC 3) in the next 8CH space of the previous round.
CH 1, (3 DC) in the 3CH space of the previous round.
Continuing R2
CH 1, (DC 3, CH 2, DC 3) in the next 8CH space of the previous round.
Now you will do 3 DC where indicated by the needle.
Three pictures to show you all the three places where to insert the crochet for each DC.
Continuing R2
At the end, you will join with a SS on the 2nd CH made at the beginning of this round – where indicated by the needle.
R3
CH 2, turn.
The first 2 CH will count as DC.
(2 DC) in the 1 CH space of the previous round.
CH 1, (3 DC) in the next 1 CH space of the previous round, CH 1.
And now the corner (DC 3, CH 2, DC 3) in the previous corner.
Continuing R3
CH 1, (3DC) in the 1 CH space, CH 1, (3DC) in the 1 CH space, 1 CH, (DC 3, CH 2, DC 3) for the corner.
Continuing R3
CH 1, (3DC) in the 1 CH space, CH 1, (3DC) in the 1 CH space, 1 CH, (DC 3, CH 2, DC 3) for the corner.
Again CH 1, (3DC) in the 1 CH space, CH 1, (3DC) in the 1 CH space, 1 CH, (DC 3, CH 2, DC 3) for the corner.
CH 1 and join with a SS to the 2 CH made at the beginning of this rouond.
Finishing
After you’ve done the last st (SS), you will cut a little bit of a tail to weave in.
Take the darning needle and weave all the ends (this one and the initial one, when you joined the new colour) and your SPIDER GRANNY SQUARE is done!
Blocking
Now, if you want, you could block the Spider Granny Square to give it a better shape, you can also block the legs to keep them in the right position.
Now that you have mastered the pattern you can create as many as Spider Granny Square you want.
You can use different yarn and you can join them together to create various projects: pillow covers, bags, etc.
You could also joined them together with my Cat Granny Square, free pattern at this link.
