HOW TO

The Bacon Granny Square is a normal Granny Square where you will have to change colour to obtain that specific design.

To create the Bacon Granny Square I used my pattern of the Modified Granny Square that is nothing but a standard Granny Square but with less chains and less holes, you can find a video on how to make it at this link.

The Egg Granny Square instead start with the yolk as a sort of amigurumi and then you will join the white egg with the crochet hook, no sewing involved!

After the patterns, you will also see how to join them together.

MATERIAL

I used:

  • 3mm crochet hook
  • Rainbow Cotton 8/6 n. 55 (Sunny Yellow – abbr. Y) – 3gr
  • Rainbow Cotton 8/6 n. 01 (White – abbr. W) – 16 gr
  • Rainbow Cotton 8/6 n. 60 (Bordeaux – B) – 8 gr
  • stitch marker
  • darning needle
  • stuffing

I bought the yarn at Hobbii.

TERMS

Here below the list of the stitches (US terminology) that you are going to use for this project.

  • MR = Magic Ring (or Magic Circle, Magic Loop)
  • CH = Chain
  • SS = Slip Stitch
  • SC = Single Crochet
  • HDC = Half Double Crochet
  • DC = Double Crochet
  • INC = Increase (if not specified it’s an increase of Single Crochet)
  • sk = skip
  • st = stitches
  • Cluster: 3 DC in the same stitch or in between previous clusters
  • Corner: (3 DC, 2 CH, 3 DC) all in the previous 2-ch space
  • Instruction between * … * means you have to repeat what is between the asterisks by the times indicated after the second asterisk.
  • Instruction between ( … ) means you have to do all the stitches in the brackets in the same stitch.
  • The number in brackets at the end of the row/round indicates the total number of stitches for that row/round.
  • You will always find the acronym of the stitch and a number close to it; if the number is before the name of the stitch, it means that you will have to repeat those stitches in the same space.

For example:

5 SC = 5 Single Crochet in the same stitch/space

SC 5 = 5 Single Crochet in the next 5 stitches

When you did 20 SC, stuff the two parts, being careful not stuffing too much, the white part should remain flat.

When you did all the 30 SC, do a SS on the first st of the round.

Finishing and blocking (optional)

Fasten off, weave in ends and, if you think it’s necessary you can actually block your Egg Granny Square before joining with others Granny Squares.

BACON GRANNY SQUARE

As mentioned at the beginning, for the Bacon Granny Square you will do a normal Granny Square following the colour change scheme below, keeping in mind that the chart is designed to turn every round (in order to avoid a twisted Granny Square).

If you want your Bacon Granny Square be the same size of the Egg Granny Square, not only you will have to use the same size of yarn, but the same type of Granny Square: again, as mentioned at the beginning, for this project, I used my modified Granny Square method that you can find at this link – in the video you will see also how to make a border, but you don’t need it in this case.

Below you will find the chart.

Red is for Bordeaux (B) and Black is for White (W).

Bacon Granny Square Chart

As you can see also in the video, you will start with a MR and then you will do Round 1, then you will join with a SS and you will start Round 2 with 2 CH and turning in the other direction as indicated by the blue arrows.

You will have to change colour quite often so you can decide to just cut the yarn each time or to create mini bobbins, it’s up to you.

Whichever method you use, remember to weave the ends in when you’re done.

HOW TO JOIN THE GRANNY SQUARES

You can join your Bacon and Eggs Granny Squares in the method you prefer.

I used a seamless / invisible join: you can watch the video below to make the same.

In order to be invisible on the front side, use the seamless join positioning your Granny Square with the right sides facing together.

For the Egg Granny Square the front side is where the yolk is.

For the Bacon Granny Square the front side is the one where you don’t see all the ends you weaved in.

I hope you enjoyed this Free Pattern 🥰
