Oval Basket – Crochet

Oval Basket – Crochet

PREMISE

I needed a small basket to organize better my sewing/crochet room.

I decide I wanted it in an oval shape.

I also recorded a video-tutorial explaining how you can create a perfect oval basis for every project and size.

You can see the video clicking here.

Oval crochet basket start
Oval Basket double strand

If you would like to create a bigger basket, like the one in this photo, you can simply use double strand of the same yarn.

Anyway, at this link, you can find the patter of the oval basket with double strand.

Here below the free pattern for this basket!

This pattern is totally free, but it’s intellectual property of Elendipity:
You can use it and, of course, you can sell the final products you create, but you cannot sell the pattern (which is also illegal by the way… just saying 🤷‍♀️😂).

You should also credit Elendipity (as pattern creator) whenever you sell the final product.

Feel free to tag me on my Instagram if you create it, I would love to see your works!!

HOW TO

MATERIAL

I used:

  • 3.5mm crochet hook
  • Pastel Purple Yarn (Cotton 8/8 – color n. 41, from Hobbii) – about 27 grams
  • Baby Purple Yarn (Cotton 8/8 – color n. 67, from Hobbii) – about 6 grams
  • Light Purple Yarn (Cotton 8/8 – color n. 40, from Hobbii) – about 5 grams
  • Dusty Purple Yarn (Cotton 8/8 – color n. 68, from Hobbii) – about 4 grams
  • Purple Yarn (Cotton 8/8 – color n. 39, from Hobbii) – about 1 grams
  • stitch markers
TERMS

Here below the list of the stitches (US terms) we are going to use for this project.
Don’t worry, also a beginner can do it, it just asks a little bit of practice on these stitches.

  • CH = Chain
  • SC = Single Crochet
  • INC (Increase) = 2 stitches in the same stitch
  • DC = Double Crochet
  • SS = Slip Stitch
  • st = stitches
  • BLO = Back Loop Only

Shall we start?

Let’s go!!

OVAL

To understand better how to do the oval with the help of the stitch markers, have a look at the video.

Below the video, you will find the written pattern.

The initial chains of the rounds don’t count as a stitch.

At the end of each round you can find the stitch count in brackets.

  • FOUNDATION CHAIN

Starting with Pastel Purple

CH 20

  • ROUND 1

DC 17 starting from the 3rd CH from the hook, 6DC into last chain. You are now working on the opposite side of the foundation chain. DC 16, 5DC into the last CH, SS in the first stitch to join. (44)

  • ROUND 2

Ch 2, INC, DC 16, (INC) x 6 times, DC 16, (INC) x 5 times, SS in the first stitch to join. (56)

  • ROUND 3

Ch 2, INC, DC 17, (INC, DC 1) x 6 times, DC 16, (INC, DC 1) x 5 times, SS in the first stitch to join. (68)

  • ROUND 4

Now we will start to work only SC (no DC anymore), so also the INC will be of SC.

Ch 1, INC, SC 18, (INC, SC 2) x 6 times, SC 16, (INC, SC 2) x 5 times, SS in the first stitch to join. (80)

BASKET

Now that we will work the top part of the project (giving shape to the basket), I would recommend you to yarn under (instead of yarning over) in each stitch: this will help avoiding the side will bulge.

On YouTube, you can find many videos about how to yarn under.

  • ROUND 5

This round will be worked BLO.

Ch 1, SC 80, SS in the first stitch to join. (80)

  • ROUND 6-9 (4 rounds)

Ch 1, SC 80, SS in the first stitch to join. (80)

In the last stitch change colour to Baby Purple.

  • ROUND 10-13 (4 rounds)

Ch 1, SC 80, SS in the first stitch to join. (80)

In the last stitch change colour to Light Purple.

  • ROUND 14-16 (3 rounds)

Ch 1, SC 80, SS in the first stitch to join. (80)

In the last stitch change colour to Dusty Purple.

  • ROUND 17-18 (2 rounds)

Ch 1, SC 80, SS in the first stitch to join. (80)

In the last stitch change colour to Purple.

  • ROUND 19

Ch 1, SC 80, SS in the first stitch to join. (80)

  • ROUND 20

Ch 1, SS 80. (80)

Fasten off and weave ends.

And HERE WE ARE!

Basket is really cute! Can you tell me the approximate dimensions of the oval basket?
