Imagine the look on your loved one’s face as they receive this sweet little treasure, bursting with your love and stitches. Inside, tuck a heartfelt letter or a small, meaningful trinket. The possibilities are endless, as is the cuteness!
Valentine’s Crochet Envelope: A Beginner Friendly Crochet Project
In this blog post, I’m thrilled to share the free crochet pattern for this adorable envelope, along with step-by-step instructions and plenty of customization tips. So grab your hook, your favorite yarn (think pinks, reds, and anything that speaks to your heart!), and let’s get crocheting!

HOW TO
To create this envelope, you will create a simple crochet square with Single Crochet (US terms).
Then you will turn it and fold it to create an envelope. You will quickly and easily sew the parts together and that’s it, your envelope will be done!

MATERIAL
I used:
- Crochet Hook: 7 mm
- For the square: Hobbii Honey Bunny, colour n. 40 (Tomato – T) – about 17 gr
- For the border: Hobbii Honey Bunny, colour n. colour n. 43 (Bordeaux- B) – about 3 gr
- Stitch markers
- Button
- Darning needle
- Embroidery thread or thinner yarn for button + sewing needle
The yarn is from Hobbii.
TERMS
Here below the list of the stitches (US terms) that you are going to use for this project.
- CH = Chain
- SS = Slip Stich
- SC = Single Crochet
- Number in brackets, at the end of each round, indicates the total stitches for the round.
- Instruction between * … * means you have to repeat what is between the asterisks by the times indicated after the second asterisk.
- Instruction between ( … ) means you have to do all the stitches in the brackets in the same stitch.
- You will always find the acronym of the stitch and a number close to it; if the number is before the name of the stitch, it means that you will have to repeat those stitches in the same space. For example: 5 SC = 5 Single Crochet in the same stitch / SC 5 = 5 Single Crochet in the next 5 stitches
Shall we start?
Let’s go!!
SQUARE
START
Starting with Tomato (T) yarn and 7 mm hook, make 16 CH.
Now you will do Row 1, starting from the second CH from the hook.
CH 1 at the end of the rows DOESN’T count as a stitch.
- R1
SC 15, CH 1, turn (15)
If you are a beginner, I would recommend to put one stitch marker on the 1st stitch of each row and another one on the last stitch of the row, so in total, while you are working, after the second row, you should have 2 stitch markers on your work to know where you start and where you finish.
- R2 – R13 (12 rows)
SC 15, CH 1, turn (15)
- R14
SC 15 (15)
Don’t CH 1 and don’t turn!
Measure the piece you just made and make sure it’s a square. If it’s not increase or decrease the number of rows until you reach the shape of a square.
In the last SC you will change colour to Bordeaux (B) and now follow the instruction to create a border.
BORDER
Work SC 1 in the same space where you just did the last SC with the previous colour – place a stitch marker in this first stitch of the new colour.
Then work SC 1 in each of the side of the rows of the square (on the left side), when you reach the corner you will do 3 SC in the corner stitch.
Then work SC 1 in each of the chains in the bottom of the your square, then again 3 SC in the corner and then again SC 1 in each of the side of the rows of the square (on the right side).
Then you will work SC 1 on top of each SC of the last row you did with the previous colour.
When you reach the stitch marker work 1 SC where you worked the first one and then make a SS on top of the stitch where the stitch marker is.
Now you will do 6 CH in order to create the loop for the button.
And close the loop making another SS in the same stitch where you did the SS before the CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
ASSEMBLING
First of all, GOOD JOB!
You did the envelope, let’s give it the right shape!
Now you will have a square, flip it so you are facing the wrong side.
STEP 1
Move the square in order to have a rhombus – look at the image.
STEP 2
Now you will fold the three bottom corners into the centre, like in the image with the arrows – image on the right will be result.
STEP 3
You can keep these three parts together with the help of some stitch markers, then turn the bottom part inside out.
Now you will sew them together. I used the invisible join I use for joining Granny Square: video-tutorial at this link.
STEP 4 – Button
You can now sew a button where the 3 parts are joined together.
Congratulations!
Now you Valentine’s envelope is done and you can write a nice love message to insert inside!
